Marylandwas established with religious freedom for Catholics. The colonial economy was based on tobacco cultivated by Africans who had been enslaved.

Baltimore County, Maryland was founded in 1659 and included most of northeastern Maryland. The original county included parts of Cecil, Frederick, Harford, Carroll, and Baltimore Counties.

Phillisyanna Maxwell Day was born on March 3, 1723 in the part of Baltimore County that is now Harford County, Maryland. Her birth was recorded at St. James Parish, Baltimore, Maryland. Her parents were James Maxwell, the elder and Mary Marsh.

When her father died, she inherited one third of Maxwell's Conclusion.

She married John Day on July 20, 1742 at St. James Parish. John was born on April 25, 1723 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was the son of Edward and Avarilla Day. In March, 1733/4, John was bound to Joshua Starkey when he was 16 until he became 21.

Days Point is in Harford County and projects into the Gunpowder River.

Their children included:
Mary Day Matthews (1743, married Levin Matthews and Nicholas Gassaway),
James Maxwell Day (1746),
Avarilla Day Cruikshanks (1749, married Robert Cruikshanks),
John Day, Jr. (1755, married Mary Gouldsmith Presbury),
Phillisyanna Day (1759, died at birth).

Phillisyanna died in childbirth in 1759 and her baby died the next day. The sad events were recorded at St. James Parish.

After her death John married Sarah Horner York. She had been married before to John York.

Sarah and Edward's children included:
Sarah Day Weatherall (1768, married James Weatherall),
Charlotte Elizabeth Day Weatherall (1771, married Henry Weatherall),
Nicholas Day (1773, married Margaret Denniston and Juliet McPherrin), and
Edward Day (1776, married Hannah Wilmer).

Sarah died in childbirth on July 22, 1780.

John's will, was written December 15, 1782 and probated February, 1784. It named
Maxwell's Conclusion, Day's Double Purchase, Holmwood, and Gay's Meadows..."

In the 1783 assessment of Harford County in the Gunpowder Upper and Gunpowder Lower Hundred

Bound children were indentured servants whose master provided training in a craft, board, lodging, and clothes for seven years or until the child came of age.
Childbirth was was perilous. Around 1.5 percent of births ended in the mother's death. Since women gave birth to many children, chances of dying in childbirth were quite high.

Edward Day (Nicholas) was born about 1689 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He married Avarilla Taylor were married May 22, 1722 in Baltimore County. Avarilla Taylor was the daughter of John Taylor.

On its clasp, the Bible bears the inscription "John Day son of Edward, 1760."

John and Phillis Zana were parents of:
Mary, b. 5 Feb 1744, d. 20 November 1797 in her 54th year. She m. 1st, Levin Matthews on 29 November 1764, and 2nd, Nicholas Gassaway.
Avarilla, b. 16 September 1749.
John, b. 8 (elsewhere the date 14 October is given) October 1755.
Phillis Zana, b. 21 May 1759, d. 22 May 1759.

John and Sarah were the parents of:
Sarah, b. 20 January 1768.
Charlotte Elizabeth, b. 17 July 1771.
Nicholas, b. 14 March 1773.
Edward, b. 7 November 1776.

Mary Day, daughter of John Day of Edward and Phillis Zana,
m. Levin Matthews on 29 November 1764.

Levin and Mary were the parents of:
Levin, b. 3 January 1768, bapt. by Rev. Andrew Lendrum. 14. Ann, b. 2 July 1773.

John Day son of John Day of Edward, was b. 8 or 14 October 1755, and d. 1 January 1791. John Day
m. Mary Gouldsmith Presbury were m. 30 November 1755. Mary Gouldsmith, daughter of G. Gouldsmith Presbury and his wife Elizabeth, was b. 1 July 1758. Mary Gouldsmith Day, wife of John Day, died 18 September 1786. She was decently interred on the 19th. Her funeral was preached by Mr. Cloud, an able minister, who took his text from "2nd Gen7! of Peter 3rd chapter, verse 14.

Mary Gouldsmith, b. 2 October 1781.
Gouldsmith, b. 21 October 1782.
Martha Gouldsmith, b. 7 April 1785.

Edward Day, son of John, was b. 7 Nov 1776. He m. Hannah Wilmer on 6 August 1801. They were the parents of:

Edward Day and Avarila, his wife – Baltimore County

Did set forth that John Taylor, the petitioners father had on 20 March 1724 granted to him Arthur’s Lott, lying on the west side of the north branch of Gunpowder River. 150 acres, said land descended to the petitioner, Avarilla. (This may be Avarilla Taylor, granddaughter of Arthur Taylor, father of Richard Taylor).

Petition to resurvey the land to ascertain correct acreage. Warrant granted 1737 to Avarilla Day for that purpose. Granted 24 February 1738.

John Day, son of Edward, of Baltimore County

Escheat tract of land – Waterstone/Waterson’s originally 21 June 1681 granted John Waterton for 31 acres. Waterton died intestate, did not convey land.

Land called Good Will, lying in Baltimore County in Gunpowder Neck, near Abraham’s Creek then to Gunpowder River, then to tract of land called Holmwood. Granted 12 June 1747 .

Gunpowder Neck, was in Baltimore, County but is now in Harford County, Maryland. Joppa was a major seaport and the county seat of Baltimore County from 1712 to 1769. St. John's Parish was in Joppa, but later moved to Kingsville, Maryland. Robins Point, Rickett Point Road, Maxwell Point Road, and Ford Point are south of the current Joppatowne on Gunpowder Neck. Spry Shoal is just off Rickett Point.
 
 

For 200 years, the Maxwell-Day house sat on a small peninsula that jutted out into the Gupowder River. Once considered the oldest existing dwelling in Harford County, it was likley built shortly after James Maxwell gave 514 acres, known as Maxwell's Conclusion, to his daughter Phillipa and her new husband, John Day. Gen.

George Caldwaler bought the property in 1848. . . It became part of the Edgewood Arsenal in 1917 and was destroyed by the army during a World War II experimental firebombing. from Edgewood by Joseph F. Murray et. al.
