Eliza Yerkes Fox

Berkeley County, Virginia was created from the northern third of Frederick County, Virginia in 1772. Jefferson County was formed from the county's eastern section. In 1863 Berkeley County became part of the new state of West Virginia .

Eliza Yerkes Fox was born on January 12, 1809 in Jefferson County, Virginia which is now in West Virginia. She was the daughter of Josiah Yerkes and Sarah Lupton.

She married Levi Fox in 1831 when she was twenty-two years old. Their life together and children are described in the Levi and Eliza Fox section.

She died on January 12, 1850 in Butler County, Ohio. 1849 was the "cholera Summer" in Butler County and  small-pox spread the following winter.

Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine. It can be mild, but one in 20 infected persons experiences rapid loss of body fluids leading to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours.
