Christian Bonham Fox

Lawrenceville, Mercer County, New Jersey was founded as Maidenhead in 1697, as part of Burlington County in the colony of West Jersey. In 1714, the village became a part of Hunterdon County.

Christian (Christiana) Bonham Fox was born in 1737 in Maidenhead, Hunterdon County, (now Lawrence, Mercer County), New Jersey. She was the daughter of Amariah Bonham.

She married Absalom Fox. Their children and life together are described in the section on Absalom and Christian Fox.

She was an early pioneer in Ohio and lived there with her youngest daughter, Rebecca Dearth's family after her husband’s death in 1797.

She died in 1821 in Springsboro, Warren County, Ohio. She was buried with the Dearth family in Springboro, Ohio.

  • Hunterdon County was originally part of Burlington County, West Jersey. It was set off from Burlington County on March 11, 1714. It included Amwell, Hopewell, and Maidenhead Townships.

  • The Dutch were the first Europeans claim land in New Jersey. The region became a territory of England in 1664 when an English fleet sailed into New York Harbor and took control of Fort Amsterdam.

    The first Europeans settled in the Northwest Territory in 1788. The Miami Company managed settlement in the southwest and the Connecticut Land Company managed settlement in the northeast. Migrants came from New York and New England. Ohio was admitted to the Union as the 17th state on March 1, 1803.
