Washington County, Tennessee,was established in 1777 as Washington County, North Carolina. From 1784 to 1788,it was part of the State of Franklin.

John Hendrix was born about 1756. He was the son of Nathan and Ruth Hendrix. He was a soldier in the American Revolution.

He married Hannah Kelly. Hannah was the daughter of Benjamin Kelly.

They married in Virginia and then moved to Washington County, Tennessee.

At the Carter County, May court in 1805 an indenture was recorded. William Frazier by John Frazier to Nathan Hendrix (Hendricks) to learn "the art and mystery of agriculture" until William shall arrive to the age 21. It was proven by John Worley, a subscribing witness.

In 1835 Solomon was a listed as pensioner who had served during the American Revolution. He had been a private on the Virginia line and was paid $240 and $80 year. In 1832 he was age 79.

East Tennessee is part of Appalachia. At the end of the French and Indian War, colonists began drifting into the area. In 1769, they first settled along the Watauga River. During the Revolution, the Overmountain Men defeated British loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The State of Franklin was formed in the 1780s, but never admitted to the Union.

Carter County, Tennessee was organized from Washington County on April 9, 1796. Elizabethton is the county seat.

Joseph L. Hendrix, a farmer and stock raiser, and native of Grant County, Ky., was born May 19, 1845.

His father, William Hendrix, a native of Carter County, Tenn., and a farmer, represented Grant County in the Legislature in 1844-45, and was one of the signers of the State Constitution of 1849; was also magistrate for many years. He settled in Grant County in 1833 on a farm near Elliston Station, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1875.

He married Catherine Heart, of Carter County, Tenn., daughter of Leonard and Mallie (Goodman) Heart, who bore him four sons and five daughters, the subject of this sketch being the youngest son.

John Hendrix, grandfather of Joseph L., was a native of Virginia, and settled in Carter County, Tenn., where he died.

Joseph L. Hendrix has always followed farming, and owns a farm of 400 acres, of which 300 lie in Grant County, well cultivated and well stocked. In 1870 he married Gilla Rosell, of Gallatin County, daughter of Joseph F. and Liza (Brock) Rosell. She died in 1873, and in 1883 Mr. Hendrix married Nannie Rogers, of Grant County, daughter of Samuel and Lucinda Rogers. Mr. Hendrix is a Democrat. His wife is a member of the Christian Church.
