Ancestors of Eliza Fox Smith
Eliza Fox Smith's ancestors came from England to Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey in 1729. They moved with a group of Baptists, led by the Reverend Sutton to Loudoun County, Virginia to Hampshire County, West Virginia to Washington County, Pennsylvania and finally to Warren County, Ohio. Eliza's great-grandfather, Bonham Fox, went on to Butler County, Ohio and her grandfather, Levi Fox, moved on to Lucas County, Iowa. When Levi's son, John Newton Fox, married Sarah Jane Ricketts in 1863, they again united the Baptist families (Yerkes, Ricketts, Oxley, Fox, Bonham) who had settled in New Jersey and had been moving together and intermarrying since the 17th century. According to oral family history, the strict religious tradition continued through Eliza Fox.
