An American Family History

Brandstetter and Spitelmaier Families

Ancestors of Sarah Branstiter Taylor

The ancestors of Sarah Branstiter Taylor were German Palatine Lutherans who were driven out of Germany by war, famine, despotic rule, and disease. They were attracted to Pennasylvania by the first settlers who sent back favorable reports. Johann Jacob Branstetter and Anna Magdalena Spitelmaier immigrated in 1738 to Pennsylvania on the ship Robert and Alice. 1738 was marked by considerable deprivation on the journey so much so that it became known as the the "Year of the Destroying Angels."

Sarah's great grandfather, John Jacob Branstetter, was a private in the Northampton Militia during the American Revolution. Many thanks to Richard W. Brunstetter and Darlene Lockwood Kennedy who provided much for the research on this family.
