An American Family History

Emma Bertrand Smith's grandparents, Catherine and Francois Bertrand, immigrated from Belgium in 1870. They lived briefly in Illinois where they died. Their three sons moved to Iowa.

Emma's mother's grandfather, Thomas Long, was a Union soldier in the Civil War. Thomas was born in Ohio, moved to Illinois where he married and then moved his family to Iowa. They finally homesteaded in North Dakota.
