An American Family History

The Baker, Kessler, Kibler, Kenoyer & Gramm Families

Ancestors of Elizabeth Baker Branstiter

Elizabeth Baker Branstiter was born in 1805 in Virginia. Her ancestors were German Palatine Lutherans who were driven out of Germany by war, famine, despotic rule, and disease. The first settlers in America sent back favorable reports and others followed. The Bakers, Kesslers, Kiblers and Kenoyers came to Philadelphia in this wave of immigration. From there, they went to Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and then to Clark County, Ohio where Elizabeth met and married Daniel Branstiter.

This German-American community was active in the American Revolution. Elizabeth's grandfathers, Jacob Baker and Henry Kessler served in the American Revolution as did her great-grandfather, Leonard Kenoyer. Her great- grandfather, Henry Kibler donated "mutton and money" to the cause.

Her family remained devoted Lutherans and the church was the center of their community.
